The Yatta VineyardThe Yatta Vineyard, a subsidiary of KWAL is situated in the Yatta plateau in Machakos District, East of Nairobi City. The Vineyard was established as a backward integration for producing grapes, the raw material for manufacture of wines for the company.
The plateau has a Mediterranean type of climate suitable for grape production with hot and cold seasons. The farm has an elaborate network of drip irrigation used to supplement the water needs during the dry spell or when rainfall is below expectations.
The warm temperatures ranging between 250C – 320 C assist in maturation of the grapes. The mature grapes are handpicked skillfully and selected carefully to ensure that the grapes processed for manufacture of wines and grape juice are of very high quality.
Grapes are a healthy fruit and natural source of antioxidant.
The Yatta vineyards are as old as the country’s multi party democracy. The vines were planted in October 1992, and the seedlings were imported from South Africa. The first harvest was in 1995.
